Samsung Unveils 8K QLED TV at IFA 2018
During its press conference at IFA 2018, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will announce its foray into 8K with the unveiling of the Q900FN QLED 8K TV. Available in the U.S. starting October in an 85” size, the Q900FN will feature all the benefits of Samsung’s flagship QLED line and several enhancements that bring 8K-quality images to life.
QLED TV Features
Samsung’s QLED TV takes Quantum dot technology to the next level with advancements in light efficiency, stability and a wide color spectrum. The QLED TV can express accurate color and achieve 100 percent color volume in the DCI-P3 color space, the format for most cinema screen and HDR movies for television. The QLED TV’s 4K HDR Elite features rich, deep black levels and bold contrast to display every detail on the display. Meanwhile, 4K upscaling converts HD broadcasts into 4K, ensuring that consumers get an incredibly sharp picture no matter the original resolution of the content they are watching.
At the same time, watching sports at home often involves dealing with the brightness of the daylight at the stadium and of the daylight coming into your living room. QLED TV excels in these environments, offering superior real-world performance for color, contrast, and brightness. And on particularly bright and sunny days, the QLED TV also has anti-reflection technology that helps to minimizes glare coming in through the windows.
In addition, Samsung’s new design elements can fit into any home – regardless of the interior aesthetics or setup. When the TV is turned off, Ambient Mode brings up decorative content that blends seamlessly with your décor, all while offering useful information like weather reports, traffic updates, and news headlines. You can also use Ambient Mode to display family photos or play background music. And the Q7 and Q9 models also feature the No Gap Wall Mount, which brings the TV flush against the wall, closer than ever before, and the all-new One Invisible Connection cable, which powers the TV and allows placement of components out of sight. Consumers can now reclaim their living room space once occupied by set-top boxes, external streaming devices and video game consoles with a single optical cable that brings all devices together in a clean, orderly manner.
Samsung’s 2018 QLED TV lineup is available now at Samsung.com and at retailers nationwide. The 2018 QLED TV lineup features large screen models ranging from 65” to 88”, including: Q6F (available in 65”, 75”, and 82”), Q7C (available in 65”), Q7F (available in 65” and 75”), Q8F (available in 65”, 75” and 82”), and Q9F (available in 65”, 75” and 88”).
“At Samsung, we’ve worked tirelessly over the years to move the industry forward when it comes to premium picture quality, and the introduction of the Q900FN with 8K AI Upscaling is an integral component as we look to the future of displays,” said Jongsuk Chu, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re thrilled to introduce the Q900FN to consumers and are confident that they will experience nothing short of brilliance in color, clarity and sound from our new 8K-capable models.”
To achieve 8K-quality images, the Samsung Q900FN features Real 8K Resolution and is capable of 4,000 nit peak brightness, a standard employed by many Hollywood studios. This feature allows the Q900FN to produce four times more pixels than a 4K UHD TV and 16 times more pixels than a full HD TV. Q HDR 8K, powered by HDR10+ technology, optimizes the TV’s brightness levels and delivers the visual experience intended by creators. The Q900FN has already received the official HDR10+ logo certification.
Samsung’s proprietary AI-powered 8K Upscaling technology enhances lower resolution content to 8K quality. Whether a viewer is watching content through a streaming service, set-top box, HDMI, USB or even mobile mirroring, the 8K Quantum Processor recognizes and upscales the content to appear in 8K quality. In addition, the Q900FN features Direct Full Array Elite for enhanced contrast and precise backlighting control, and as with all of our QLED models, it delivers 100% Color Volume so viewers can experience billions of shades of color for the purest color accuracy available to date.
The Q900FN features a slate of new functions that enable consumers to get the most from their TV, while maintaining the highest quality in picture and sound. For example, the TV recognizes and analyzes a number of connected entertainment devices like audio devices connected via optical cable with the One Remote, then automatically switches the TV’s image source and audio output for an optimized viewing experience. Lifestyle features, such as Ambient Mode, have been enhanced to seamlessly blend the TV in the surrounding space and by showcasing beautiful images, weather, news and more on the screen. The One Invisible Connection, which comes standard at five meters and is also available in 15 meters, incorporates the optical cable and power into one thin cord, giving users more freedom to decide where and how they place the TV. Smart enhancements, such as SmartThings, further simplify the connected living experience, and the Universal Guide provides personalized recommendations to easily find live and OTT content on TV.
Samsung will showcase its latest television and audio announcements in its booth at IFA, located at the City Cube Berlin on Level 2.
Samsung will also highlight the capabilities of its super big screen QLED lineup at select tailgating events across the country. The tour will visit pre-game festivities at some of this season’s most intense matchups – including Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and SEC rivalries – and the most exciting playoff events, including the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and the College Football Playoff National Championship. College football fans at these events will be able to watch live college football games from around the country on Samsung QLED TV, so they can see for themselves how QLED transforms every game into the big game. They will also be eligible to win a variety of great prizes, including a trip for two to this season’s national championship game in Santa Clara, California.
LG Introduces World’s First 8K OLED TV
Already a leader in advancing TV innovation with its OLED TVs, LG Electronics (LG) is introducing the world’s first 8K (7680 x 4320) OLED TV. Previewed at IFA 2018, the 88-inch class 8K LG OLED TV features over 33 million self-emitting pixels to produce the unmatched contrast ratio and true blacks that define OLED TV’s iconic picture quality.
With OLED TV shipments in the market expected to double in 2018 and reach over nine million units by 2022, LG will continue to increase the OLED share in its premium TV portfolio and drive large scale consumer adoption of OLED TVs. While the 8K TV market is still in its infancy, it is expected to grow to more than 5 million units by 2022, and LG is committed to leading the ultra-premium market with its 8K OLED TV technology.
Despite advancements in LCD field, OLED has been often referred to as the “next-generation display technology” because it emits its own light, eliminating the need for any kind of backlighting. This allows for state-of-art TVs which redefine both the picture quality and the product design. Not only was LG able to pioneer such technologies, but it was also able to successfully market them.
“LG’s first 8K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and the next evolutionary step in display technology,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “4K OLED played a major role in reshaping TV industry and LG is confident that 8K OLED will do the same.”
